Deze periode halverwege de eeuw. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">nogal <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dit komt tot uiting in zijn werk uit die periode. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Whitten werkte samen met kunstenaars van de New York School, met name met Willem De Kooning, maar behield blijkbaar ook een zekere onafhankelijkheid van hen door contact te onderhouden met andere kleurkunstenaars en te experimenteren met zijn eigen idee\u00ebn over abstractie.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Voordat Whitten naar New York verhuisde, studeerde hij aan het Tuskegee Institute en vervolgens aan Southern University in Baton Rouge, waar hij zijn roeping voor de kunst ontdekte. Zijn verhuizing naar New York had evenveel te maken met zijn wanhoop over de onverzettelijkheid van het Zuiden tijdens de burgerrechtenbeweging als met de intentie om deel te nemen aan Cooper Union \u2013 wat in feite... <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hij<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dat deed hij. Toen Whitten op 21-jarige leeftijd naar de kunstacademie ging, was dat zijn eerste ervaring als enige zwarte man in een overwegend witte omgeving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Van de vele werken die vertegenwoordigd zijn in <i>Vijf decennia schilderkunst,<\/i> Ik ben meer gefascineerd door werken die in de jaren negentig zijn begonnen, de <i>Zwarte monolieten<\/i> die Whittens Afro-Amerikaanse helden en vrienden eren. Zoals in <i>Een eerbetoon aan Ralph Ellison <\/i>Hierboven ziet u een moza\u00efek van duizenden gekleurde moza\u00efeksteentjes. Elk steentje is gemaakt van acrylverf (en eventuele toevoegingen).
