<\/b><\/p>\n

Chi pu\u00f2 resistere a storie con personaggi in situazioni disperate? Che ci consideriamo o meno appassionati di storie di sopravvivenza in generale, ne avremo lette alcune. Sono accattivanti perch\u00e9 raccontano di una o due anime coraggiose che affrontano sfide apparentemente impossibili contro la natura. Anche se detesteremo trovarci nei loro panni, siamo ben felici di metterci nei loro panni mentre leggiamo. <\/b><\/p>\n

Molte delle mie scelte presentano un solo personaggio chiave che combatte contro gli elementi. Forse questo fa appello al lato introverso della mia natura. O forse non c'\u00e8 niente di pi\u00f9 appagante che tifare per un coraggioso perdente, e chi potrebbe meritarlo di pi\u00f9 di un solitario che prevale sugli elementi implacabili? <\/b><\/p>\n

1) Robinson Crusoe<\/b><\/p>\n

Ho dovuto leggere questo classico per l'universit\u00e0 e, a dire il vero, l'ho trovato estremamente noioso. Eppure il celebre eroe di Daniel Defoe ha lasciato il segno nella nostra coscienza culturale occidentale per generazioni. \u00c8 il tipico britannico che non si lascia domare per decenni su un'isola deserta. Crusoe si adatta all'ambiente circostante, ma conserva la fede e l'orgoglioso spirito nazionalista con cui \u00e8 nato. Per gli standard moderni, il suo atteggiamento imperiale di superiorit\u00e0 e dominio non \u00e8 la sua caratteristica pi\u00f9 ammirevole. Ma ragazzi, ha funzionato davvero per il nostro amico Robinson!<\/p>\n

2) Il marziano<\/b><\/p>\n

Il brillante e creativo astronauta Mark Watney rimane accidentalmente bloccato su Marte, dove i suoi compagni di equipaggio lo abbandonano credendolo morto, ma riesce a sopravvivere con nient'altro che la sua disperazione e il suo ingegno. Penso che possa ringraziare le sue patate da seme, la sua formazione botanica, le sue abitudini di autofertilizzazione in bagno e il suo rotolo apparentemente infinito di nastro adesivo. Soprattutto, Mark dimostra che un senso dell'umorismo anticonformista \u00e8 un potente strumento di sopravvivenza. Il suo atteggiamento \u00e8 sempre: "Questa novit\u00e0 \u00e8 davvero brutta e non ho ancora idea di cosa far\u00f2, ma mi verr\u00e0 in mente qualcosa, altrimenti sono storia!" (La mia opinione \u00e8 qui.)<\/p>\n

3) Vita di Pi<\/b><\/p>\n

Piscine Molitor Patel \u00e8 un adolescente pieno di risorse che non solo si ritrova bloccato su una scialuppa di salvataggio nel vasto Oceano Pacifico, ma condivide la situazione con un gruppo di animali dello zoo, tra cui Richard Parker, una feroce tigre del Bengala. Pi deve affermarsi come l'animale dominante sulla barca o morire. In breve, questo studente delle superiori deve incarnare la superiorit\u00e0 dello spirito umano solo per restare in vita. 4) Piranesi<\/b><\/p>\n

Questo giovane non solo soffre di una grave forma di amnesia, ma vive anche in una villa piena di statue e di maree crescenti, con il rischio di farlo annegare o morire di fame da un momento all'altro. Il nostro ragazzo scopre come sviluppare le sue capacit\u00e0 di pesca e di tenuta dei registri, e ci mette tutto il tempo che ha a disposizione per non disperare. E certamente \u00e8 d'aiuto quando decide di pensare alla Camera come a un ambiente amichevole con cui collaborare, piuttosto che come a un nemico da combattere. (Ne ho parlato molto bene qui.)<\/p>\n

5) Il lungo inverno<\/b><\/p>\n

In questa storia vera la famiglia Ingalls era composta da sei membri, ma formavano un nucleo familiare imbattibile. Questi ragazzi sono rimasti intrappolati in una citt\u00e0 isolata flagellata dalle bufere di neve. Stavano lentamente morendo di freddo e di fame perch\u00e9 il treno dei rifornimenti non poteva avanzare prima della primavera. L'elettricit\u00e0 per le case era ancora lontana, quindi dovettero improvvisare modi per produrre calore e cibo praticamente dal nulla, mese dopo mese, sorprendendosi della loro ingegnosit\u00e0 con bottoni e paglia. (Ho scritto di pi\u00f9 su questa avvincente storia vera qui.)<\/p>\n

Uffa, ora che ci penso, che mucchio di cose da leggere al contrario. Se dovessi scegliere una sola impostazione, quale sarebbe? Deserto rovente, pianeta rosso arido, oceano spaventoso, distesa innevata e ghiacciata o una strana casa? Penso che se dovessi scegliere, mi unirei a Piranesi nell'infinita serie di sale con tutte le statue. Anche se \u00e8 una prospettiva orribile, c'\u00e8 qualcosa che mi attrae. <\/b><\/p>\n
